Interest Rates are key elements in the real estate market. Their movements are critical to real estate investment decisions and home buying. However, to most of us they are a mystery. How are they formed? What influences them? This class will introduce you to the players and institutions that influence interest rates.

  • What is the Federal Reserve?
  • How was it formed and how does it influence interest rates?
  • What is the role of Ben Bernanke?
  • How does monetary policy work?
  • How are monetary policy and fiscal policy related?
  • Is the Fed independent?
  • What is the Open Market Committee and why is it important?
  • What is the Fed Funds rate?
  • What are CDO's and how did they influence the real estate market?
  • Tax cuts, rebates and other incentives, do they help?
  • Do decisions at the national policy level affect us in Tucson?

As real estate professionals, we should be knowledgeable of these market issues. Our clients expect us to know what is going on in the world of finance and depend upon our advice with regard to real estate investment decisions, whether they are about selling or purchasing an office building, a lot or a home. An understanding of the interest rate market and how the Federal Reserve affects this market is key to making informed judgments about the future of those real estate investment decisions.
